A comprehensive list of all the Electric Cars and EVs currently being sold in New Zealand. This page is regularly updated as new NZ EVs are released
Electric Cars are the future for New Zealand's Car and Vehicle fleet. However EVs (Electric Vehicles) still only make up a tiny fraction of the total cars sales in New Zealand. We have compiled a comprehensive list of most of the current Electric Cars NZ available in New Zealand, as of the beginning of 2021. If you would like to view our new updated list of EVs being sold in NZ in 2022, click here.
There are a number of reasons why electric cars haven't yet taken off in New Zealand. The main reasons being price, a lack of selection and range, and many not having the best performance, especially when compared to their petrol equivalents. Also many electric cars and hybrids just look plain ugly when compared to their petrol equivalent models. The other problem with EVs, is that some vehicle categories are not catered for with the current EV offerings. eg Utes, small trucks and vans. Luckily this is now changing, and more and more brands are now releasing new EV models around the world.
We are passionate about electric vehicles, and the many advantages they offer over their fossil fuel equivalents. We believe that more should be done in New Zealand to increase the uptake of Electric Cars. We think the NZ Government can also help increase the uptake of EVs, by offering subsidies or removing GST on them, to incentivise people to buy EVs instead of cheaper petrol equivalent vehicles.
Our 2021 Electric Cars NZ list only contains pure electric vehicles. So it doesn't contain hybrids, or plugin hybrids, which both have combustion engines in them.
