When it comes to bike accessories, safety should be a top priority. That is where the XOSS LED Bicycle Light literally shines. We were looking for a bike headlight that was bright, durable, and affordable and couldn't find anything in local bike shops without having to spend big money. After a bit of online research and reading reviews, we stumbled upon the XOSS range of bicycle lights. We have now been using the XOSS XL-800 LED Bike Headlight light for the past 3 months and have now used it enough to write a real life user review on it.
Here’s a closer look at what makes the XOSS LED Bike Headlight a good option for anyone looking for a Bicycle light.
Key Features and Performance
1. Brightness and Visibility
- With up to 800 lumens of brightness, the XOSS LED Light is designed to illuminate surroundings in dark conditions, and keep riders visible.
- It has three brightness settings. This allows riders adjust the light intensity to match their requirements, as well as to control battery drain.
- The HIGHEST brightness setting has a brightness of 800 Lumens and has a range of up to 200 metres. MEDIUM has a brightness of 400 lumens and up to 100 metre range. LOW is 200 lumens and up to 50 metres range. We found the MEDIUM setting to be a good amount of light for normal night riding, and HIGH is good for pitch black situations .
- The light also has two flashing modes. Ones is a strobe flash, and the other is a SOS setting. The strobe flashing setting is at MEDIUM brightness and is good to use as a daylight running light to give riders extra visibility. The SOS setting is at MAXIMUM brightness, and flashes 'S O S' in Morse Code.
2. Battery Life and Charging
- Powered by a rechargeable battery, the XOSS XL-800 LED light can last up to 6 hours on a full charge on the lowest brightness setting.
- The box says that at the High setting, the battery can last up to 1.4 hours hours. At the Medium setting it can last 2.7 hours, and at the lowest setting, it can last up to 6 hours. However our real-life usage of this light, the battery life was less than this. At the highest brightness setting, the light is lucky to last an hour. But maximum brightness is probably too bright for normal nighttime usage in the city.
- The lights on/off switch has an LED that shows you how much battery is remaining. WHen full, the switch is GREEN, when it is medium capapcity it turns to BLUE, and when the battery is low it turns RED.
- The device charges via USB C, making it convenient to recharge at home or in the office. Many bike lights still use micro USB, so it is good that this one comes with a newer generation USB-C plug.
- The website says that it takes 3.5 hours to charge and the power switch will turn green when fully charged.
3. Mounting and Installation
- The XOSS LED light features an easy-to-install mounting system that allows quick attachment and removal. This is particularly useful for riders who need to detach the light frequently for security reasons or to switch the light between bikes.
- The light comes with a mounting strap. However you can also purchase a GoPro mount with the light, where it will mount upside down. The downside with this mounting position is you can't see the battery indicator on the switch, so you don't know when the battery is low.
4. Build Quality and Durability
- The XOSS bike light has metal housing and feels high quality and solid in the hand. The packaging says it has a CNC body.
- The light is water-resistant, making it suitable for use in various weather conditions.
- With its compact and robust design, the XOSS light is built to withstand daily use, making it a reliable addition to any cyclist’s gear.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- High brightness level with adjustable brightness settings for different environments.
- Reasonable battery life suitable for many users.
- Easy installation and removal make it easy to charge and for multiple bikes.
- Durable and weather-resistant making it suitable for most riding.
Cons:
There are very few cons with the XOSS Bike Headlight, but these are are gripes. Some of these also apply to all rechargeable bike lights.
- Being rechargeable with the battery built into the light, you can't just insert new batteries when the battery runs out. So it can be handy to have two of these lights if you do a lot of night riding.
- Battery life doesn't appear to be as good as that indicated on the box.
- When mounted on a GoPro mount, you can't see the battery indictor light.
Our Overall Impression and Review of the XOSS LED Bicycle Headlight
After 3 months of use we have been very impressed with the XOSS LED Bicycle Light. It is a well-rounded option for anyone in need of a reliable and bright headlight for cycling. It can also be used as a standalone torch, as it is is very powerful and compact to carry around. Its combination of brightness, battery life, price and ease of use makes it a great choice for both daily commuters and recreational riders alike. Overall it provides excellent value at an affordable price.
For those bike riders looking to prioritize safety and visibility without breaking the bank, the XOSS LED Bicycle Light could be a good option for you. WE fond the EL-800 which is the 800 lumen model, more than powerful enough. However XOSS do also do a 1200 Lumen model that you can also buy using our links below. Some people may also find the cheaper 400 lumen model bright enough. However if you buy the more powerful 800 Lumen model, you can set it to 400 Lumens if you find 800 too bright.
Please note that we purchased this light ourselves and this is our own genuine review of this product. We have not been paid to write this review.
