Introduction: Where Masterpiece Meets Lego Brick - LEGO Vincent van Gogh - The Starry Night Lego Ideas Set (21333)
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a painting, the LEGO Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night set (21333) offers the next best thing. Inspired by one of the worlds most iconic artwork, this 2,316-piece set is a tribute to Van Gogh. It successfully reinterprets one of the most famous Post-Impressionist paintings into a framed 3D painting sculpture. It is also one of the most satisfying LEGO builds we’ve experienced.
First Impressions of The Starry Night Lego Ideas Set:
Unboxing this set feels like many of the other Lego Ideas sets which are designed for Adult Lego Fans. The instruction manual includes a bit of background on Van Gogh and the fan designer, Truman Cheng, whose original idea won LEGO’s Ideas vote. It is quite a thick manual and relatively easy to follow.

Building the LEGO The Starry Night Lego Ideas Set :
From a construction standpoint, this set showcases many different LEGO building techniques. The model is essentially a brick-built “painting” framed and mounted for display. The set is built in layers, using SNOT (Studs Not On Top) techniques to recreate Van Gogh’s swirling sky and layered terrain.
The sky is built almost entirely sideways using plates and tiles. The sky section features curved and arched elements anchored to Technic pins and SNOT bricks, which allow for the organic forms.
The cypress tree and town elements are constructed with vertical stacking and angular offsets, giving the scene real depth and shadow. Curved slopes, 1x1 modified tiles with clips, and hinge plates are used liberally to suggest movement and flow, especially in the sky. The illusion of brushstrokes is achieved by staggering tiles and plates of varying lengths and colors.
A cool feature of this set is the additional of the Van Gogh minifigure, complete with a paintbrush and easel, and a large printed tile of the painting. This sits on a small articulated stand in front of the main build.
Conclusion: LEGO Vincent van Gogh - The Starry Night Lego Ideas Set
The Vincent van Gogh Starry Night Lego set is a great looking display set. It is not the kind of set you tuck away on a shelf to gather dust. It is able to be mounted on a wall or displayed on a desk, and it will turns heads. Infact people we showed it to were surprised it was made out of Lego. We give it a rating of 9.5 out of 10. Our only criticism is that we do wish it was a little larger.
Our Rating 9.5/10
