What is Gutter Foam?
Gutter Foam is a synthetic foam insert designed to fit inside your existing guttering / spouting. It is designed to stop leaves, pine needles, and other debris, while allowing rainwater to flow freely through your gutter system.
Unlike traditional gutter covers that sit on top, foam gutter inserts sit inside the gutter channel, making them nearly invisible from the ground.

Gutter Foam Pros and Cons
✅ Pros:
-
Easy to install: Perfect for homeowners who want to avoid professional installation costs.
-
Cost-effective: One of the most affordable gutter protection systems on the market.
-
Low profile: Sits inside the gutter, maintaining curb appeal.
-
Improves water flow: Prevents clogs and overflow during most rainfall sessions.
❌ Cons:
-
Will require occasional maintenance: Fine debris like pine needles can sit on top of the foam. Tiny leaves and seeds, and dust like pollen and dirt off the roof may flow through the foam and accumulate in the bottom of the gutter. We are not sure how much of an issue this will be over time.
-
Durability may vary: Foam can degrade over time, especially in harsh weather climates. It may break down from UV. Some companies like the one we purhcased from provide a UV resistant product and also offer a warranty on it. However some products don't mention any UV resistance or warranty.
May not be safe for water collection for drinking water. Some companies claim that their gutter foam is safe to use for water collection, however other manufactures either don't mention this, or say it isn't suitable for water collection. The one we purchased does state that it is safe for water collection.
How to Install Gutter Foam (Step-by-Step Instructions)
Buy the correct size of Gutter Foam insert for your Gutters / Spouting
Gutter foam comes in all sizes to suit a wide range of gutter / spouting sizes. You want to make sure that the foam will fill the width of the gutter so can be snuggly fitted across the width of the guttering, and it won't blow out.-
Clean your gutters thoroughly
Remove all debris from inside the gutters and rinse with water. -
Measure and cut the foam inserts to fit your gutter length.
You also may need to trim gutter foam to suit your gutter profile. You will need a sharp knife and metal ruler. -
Insert the foam snugly into place inside the gutter.
If you have internal brackets, you will likely need to slice a slot with a knife into the bottom of the gutter foam to accommodate the bracket. We had to do this. You will want to make sure you wear gloves to avoid cutting your hands on sharp bits of roofing as you insert the foam into the gutters. We learnt this the hard way! -
Inspect regularly, especially after major storms or each season change.
You may need to also check more regularly in Autumn when leaves are falling, that they don't settle on top of the foam. Wind should automatically blow a lot of the leaves off the roof.
