With inflation in New Zealand showing no signs of slowing down, many Kiwis are looking at ways to save money. Here are a number of online tools to save New Zealanders money on everyday household living expenses and goods.
Some of these online tools and apps have been around for many years, but a few are brand new. It is possible to save a lot of money over a year by using these online tools to find the best prices in your area. Why does anyone want to reward a company for overcharging you, when there are other companies that may provide the identical service or goods, but at a lower price?
Petrol and fuel - Gasby
A great app we have been using recently to locate the best local prices for petrol is Gasby. Gasby uses crowdsourcing to get data on petrol and diesel prices of the various fuel stations throughout New Zealand. As it uses other Gasby users to source this information, it may not be accurate or upto date. However from our experience it is fairly good. This is an app and not a website, so you need a mobile device to use it.
You can download the Gasby App using the links below.
Electricity and Gas - PowerSwitch
With the ever increasing electricity and gas prices, a great website to check if you are getting a good deal on your household power is the PowerSwitch website. The PowerSwitch website is run by Consumer NZ and is a free and independant online checking tool. Powerswitch can be accessed at www.powerswitch.org.nz.

Food and Grocery - Grocer
It is now possible to compare the prices of grocery and food items at many local supermarkets. This is a online tool that has been needed for a very long time. More info on this new web app can be found here.
You can access the grocer web app at www.grocer.nz
Electronics and Technology - PriceSpy
PriceSpy is a price comparison website for electronics and computer hardware. It also compares pricing of many other home appliances. We have been using PriceSpy for many years and is one of the original price comparison websites in New Zealand. PriceSpy is both a website and an app.
You can access the Price Spy website at www.pricespy.co.nz
Specials and Deals - ChoiceCheapies
One of the best websites that displays Sales, Bargains and Deals in New Zealand is the ChoiceCheapies website. This website has an active online community hunting out and posting some of the best deals on goods in New Zealand. You do have to be careful though, because you may end up buying things you don't really need, just because they are cheap! Buying things you don't need is not saving money!
You can access the ChoiceCheapies website at www.cheapies.nz
Broadband and ISPs Glimp
The Glimp website allows users to compare Broadband and Telco providers. It also compares power prices and if bundle your power with broadband. However in our opinion, it is best to keep services like broadband and power separate, as it then allows you to easily move provider without it affecting the price of the other service. You can also compare prices of other services through this website.
You can access the Glimp website at www.glimp.co.nz
